The Papers of Abraham Lincoln
The Papers of Abraham Lincoln is a unit of the Center for State Policy and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Springfield . It is a long-standing documentary editing project sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and cosponsored by the Center and the Abraham Lincoln Association.
The project collects and provides images of primary source documents related to Abraham Lincoln for use by students, scholars, researchers and lawyers. In 2008, the project published the four-volume set, The Papers of Abraham Lincoln: Legal Documents and Cases (University of Virginia Press), including documents from more than fifty of Lincoln's most important law cases, with illuminating essays on Lincoln's career as a lawyer.
Leading up to the Lincoln Bicentennial celebration in February, the Papers staff provided news organizations with historical information on Lincoln and gave invited presentations throughout Illinois . The staff has been involved in several television programs and documentaries on Lincoln , acting as on-air historical consultants.
Director Daniel Stowell and Assistant Director Stacy McDermott are among the staff who collect, edit and annotate Lincoln documents. Having collected over 20,000 documents, the Papers staff is now digitizing and transcribing these important pieces of history so more can be known about Lincoln and so people can access the documents online. This month, the Center for State Policy and Leadership is proud to highlight Daniel Stowell and Stacy McDermott in "In the Spotlight."
