March 7, 2007 - WUIS bureau chief recognized in national competition

SPRINGFIELD -- Kavitha Cardoza, Springfield bureau chief for public radio WUIS 91.9 FM, has received a Special Citation in the prestigious 2006 National Awards for Education Reporting competition sponsored by the Education Writers Association. This annual event honoring the best education reporting in print and broadcast media is the only independent contest of its kind in the country. Contest entries were limited to stories published or broadcast for the first time during the 2006 calendar year.

Cardoza was recognized in the radio division for her report "Discipline in District 186."

Bill Wheelhouse, WUIS general manager, noted, "Kavitha had a strong showing in the EWA contest. It should be noted that those who placed ahead of her in radio were from much larger news operations in much larger markets."

All winners will be honored at an awards banquet during the association's 60th National Seminar, to be held in May in Los Angeles.

Contest judging was conducted independently by a panel of professional journalists and journalism educators.

The Education Writers Association is a national professional association of education reporters and writers.
