February 5, 2007 - UIS to offer Certified Public Manager training
The Certified Public Manager Program of Illinois (CPMPI), a nationally recognized professional development program, will be offered beginning in March through the Institute for Legal and Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Although the program is designed specifically for public-sector managers, enrollment is open to anyone. Advance registration is required.
CPMPI training is presented in a series of daylong classes conducted by experts in public management and administration. Three levels of training address a number of core areas, such as leadership, ethics, cultural sensitivity, problem analysis and problem-solving, organizational and human resource management, improving productivity and quality, building partnerships, and public policy.
Participants can enroll individually or as part of a candidate group. Those in the open enrollment format can train at their own pace. Candidate groups attend training sessions collectively, about three times a month, becoming Certified Public Managers in 18 to 24 months.
All training, except online sessions, will be held on the UIS campus. For all on-campus workshops, check-in begins at 9 a.m.; sessions meet from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The current workshop schedule and topics are:

Training sessions will be led by Nancy Ford, UIS professor of Legal Studies and interim director of the Institute for Legal and Policy Studies; Lorena Johnson, UIS coordinator for the Certified Public Manager Program; Tracey Kriepe, instructor at Lincoln Land Community College and consultant for the SIU School of Medicine and the Western Illinois Area Health and Education Consortium; Anne Lampkin, UIS assistant professor of Social Work and Human Services; Deborah McCarrel, Illinois AmeriCorps program manager for the Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, and adjunct faculty in UIS' Graduate Public Service Internship Program; Patrick Mullen, UIS assistant professor of Public Administration with a joint appointment to the Institute for Legal and Policy Studies; Brent Never, UIS assistant professor of Public Administration; and Susan Paddock, professor of governmental affairs in the Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and director of the Wisconsin Certified Public Manager Program.
Cost per session is $150 for participants admitted into the CPM program and working toward certification; cost for others is $168 per session. Class size is limited. Registration and payment must be submitted no later than 10 days prior to each session attended.

The Institute for Legal and Policy Studies is a unit of the Center for State Policy and Leadership at UIS.
