April 3, 2006 - WUIS to air two weekly arts programs plus new documentary series

SPRINGFIELD – Starting in April, Public Radio WUIS 91.9FM-WIPA 89.3FM will add two programs geared toward people with an appreciation of art and artists to its weekly line-up. In May the station will broadcast an eight-part documentary on the history of Asian-American immigration.

The new weekly arts programs are Close Up, to be aired Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7 p.m. starting April 25, and The Word, to be aired Wednesdays in the same time slot starting April 26.

“We are thrilled to be able to round out our week of excellent locally originated programs with these two programs from the BBC,” said Sinta Seiber-Lane, WUIS program director. The new programs will replace a half-hour repeat of All Things Considered.

Close Up is an in-depth exploration of an aspect of, an event in, or high-profile figure from the world of art, culture, and entertainment. The Word features presenter Harriett Gilbert in conversations with novelists, poets, playwrights, screenwriters, copywriters, and book-sellers as she looks at the many worlds of writing, including the process, the results, and the business of promoting and selling literature.

In May, the station will broadcast Crossing East, a documentary special focusing on the history of Asian American immigration, from pre-America to post-9/11, and the impact this movement has had on descendants, global ties, and the making of the United States. Hosted by George Takei and Margaret Cho, the program will air Monday through Thursday, May 1 through 4, from 8 to 10 p.m. each night.

WUIS-WIPA is broadcast from the University of Illinois at Springfield, and is service of the Center for State Policy and Leadership at UIS. As listener-supported public radio, the station’s mission is to satisfy a curious, societally engaged audience through programming and community outreach.
