2005 Lincoln Legacy Lecture

The Center’s annual Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series has been scheduled for October. The theme of the 2005 series is “Lincoln and Economic Opportunity.” The lectures will be held on Thursday, October 13, Thursday October 20, and Wednesday October 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium, located on level 1 of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. These events are free and open to the public, with seating first come, first seated.
Professor Allen C. Guelzo, Director of Civil War Era Studies & Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era at Gettysburg College will begin the series on Thursday, October 13, 2005. Guelzo will speak on “Lincoln’s Declaration of Economic Independence.” He is the author of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Professor Michael F. Holt, Langbourne M. Williams Professor of History at the University of Virginia, will speak on “Lincoln’s Whigs: Expanding Economic Opportunities” on Thursday, October 20. Holt is the author of The Political Crisis of the 1850s.
The series will conclude on Wednesday, October 26 with Professor Gabor S. Boritt, Professor of History and Director, Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. Boritt will speak on “Lincoln and the Right to Rise.” He is the author of Lincoln and the Economics of the American Dream.
Professor Phillip Paludan, Distinguished Chair of Lincoln Studies at UIS, will provide a commentary following each lecture.
