Forum 1: A National Dilemma

PURPOSE: This is the first in a series of forums designed to share information and stimulate dialogue on the far-reaching policy problem of the student achievement gap and its impact on our communities, our economy and out future. This forum will provide an overview of the problem and perspectives on its impact. Subsequest formums will highlight best practices in closing the gap and hands-on strategies for local action.

SPEAKERS: The first forum will feature:
Ken Page - President, NAACP Springfield Branck

Ray Legler, Ph.D. - Senior Program Associate, Learning Point Associates
--Overview of the history, trenda and impact of the academic achievement gap
Kathy Havens Payne - Assistant Director Community Alliances, State Farm
--Effect of the achievement gap on the U.S. economy and global competitiveness
Sheila Stocks-Smith (moderator) - Director, Office of Education Liaison, City of Springfield
