DUI Service Provider Training - Overview

DUI Service Provider Orientation Program
This program is mandated for DASA licensed agency employees who provide DUI services in evaluation and risk education. The Service Provider Orientation is required for all new service providers who offer evaluation and risk education services in Illinois. The orientation workshops are also available to all DUI service providers who are interested in receiving periodic updates on DUI service provision requirements and procedures.

DUI service providers can take all three days of the Service Provider Orientation or one day at a time to receive certification credit and certificate. The workshop dates, times, and locations are listed in the DUI Training Brochure distributed by the Institute for Legal, Legislative and Policy Studies at the University of Illinois Springfield.

The DUI Service Provider Orientation program must be completed within the first six months of employment as a DUI service provider in the state of Illinois at this time. The three-day Orientation program is required training for all substance abuse staff who will be conducting DUI evaluations, and DUI service providers from agencies who are adding DUI evaluations to their range of client services. The Orientation program is divided into three distinct days of training:

Day 1

  1. DUI Assessment Tools - including the new ASUDS-RI
  2. How to do a DUI Evaluation

Day 2

  1. The DUI Service Provider System
  2. Legal Issues, The DUI Arrest, Field Sobriety Tests

Day 3

  1. Understanding the Secretary of State Administrative Hearing Process for DUI Offenders

Service providers who plan to work only as risk education instructors are required to attend only Day 2 of the Service Provider Orientation.  Risk education instructors are encouraged, however, to attend days 1 and 3 periodically to keep informed of changes and current practice issues in DUI service provision.  All other service providers must attend all three days of the program.

Who Should Attend

The DUI specific workshops offered by University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) are designed to meet the training needs of DUI service providers including evaluators, risk education instructors, and substance abuse treatment providers. Probation officers, social workers, and nurses who are working with DUI clients within a variety of agency and clinical settings benefit from attending the Service Provider orientation.

The Advanced Series

This training program for DUI service providers offers a variety of workshops for substance abuse professionals who have completed the service provider orientation training and must meet the annual requirement of completing 12 hours of continuing education credit.

The advanced workshops provide continuing education credits for the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association (IAODAPCA) and meet the continuing education requirements for social work and LCP/LCPC CEU's.

What Your Registration Fee Includes

Workshop fees include tuition costs, instructional materials, and lunch in orientation and advanced sessions and all refreshment breaks each day. Please note that workshop fees established are on a cost-only basis.

What to Wear

Please dress comfortably. Remember to bring a sweater or jacket if you chill easily.  Meeting room temperatures can vary.

Attendance

UIS must provide proof of attendance to DHS/DASA, Department of Human Services/Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse to certify participant completion of the annual training requirements. Anyone registering for a workshop will be asked to provide a DHS/DASA license number and professional license number.

IAODAPCA and social work continuing education procedures require documentation of program completion. Participants will sign, in person, an attendance sheet twice daily. Certificates of attendance will be mailed within two (2) weeks of the workshop date to participants who complete the requirements.

Registration Information-Cancellation-Rescheduling

UIS will attempt to accommodate as many registrants as possible for each program. However, program enrollment is limited both by the size of the training facility and by good instructional practice.  To guarantee your place in the course(s), registration and payment should be completed as soon as possible, and no later than two weeks before the start of the training.

To ensure your comfort and an optimal learning environment, UIS reserves the right to limit the number of program participants. Registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must register and provide payment prior to the beginning of the workshop(s). In case of low registrations for a particular workshop, UIS reserves the right to cancel or reschedule.

We make every effort to work with each individual in case of cancellation or rescheduling. In case of inclement weather, please contact the site of the training sessions to check on workshop cancellations.

What You Will Receive

Each participant receives an orientation manual complete with worksheets, forms, checklists, job aids, samples and models used as permanent references. Additionally, certified representatives from DASA licensed agencies will receive the materials required to use the ASUDS-RI assessment tool. Materials for the manuals are updated each year as needed.

Workshop Schedule

Registration begins at 8:30 am on each day of the workshop. The program begins at 9:00 am; sessions end at 4:00 pm. Lunch and breaks are included in the registration fee. The session should be listed on the marquee as follows: "DUI Training Program."
